Artist statement, 2018
The comprehensive digitalisation at the beginning of the 21st century requires a representation as code in art. Code extends the previous manifestations of reality. A new level is added to the relationship between an object, its designation and its representation. Code images are created by reading digital files and can be used as a "description" of digital photos be seen. If monochrome color fields are read, the character strings repeat themselves and create complex metastructures.
I produce minimal, graphic text and color work which explores the boundaries of direct visual language in the post-photographic landscape. I deconstruct colour by showing it as code itself. The depiction as code arises from the necessity to show a new level of reality, resulting from the process of digitalisation.
Codeworks occur from reading digital files onto an analogue carrier. When monochrome colour fields are read, the repeating character strings generate complex metastructures.
The logic of my work of creating a technical image of reality by pushing a trigger, has always remained the same, only the image-production machine, the camera, was replaced by a computer.
Today, algorithms and code are reality. Just as photography in the 20th century offered art new ways of presenting reality, today the code offers new possibilities for handling reality. In the 21st century, code claims the reality sovereignty.
Die anfangs des 21. Jahrhunderts beginnende umfassende Digitalisierung erfordert eine Darstellung als Code in der Kunst. Code erweitert die bisherigen Erscheinungsformen der Realität. Der Beziehung zwischen einem Objekt, seiner Bezeichnung und seiner Repräsentation wird eine neue Ebene hinzugefügt. Codebilder entstehen durch das Auslesen digitaler Dateien und können als “Beschreibung“ von Digitalfotos gesehen werden. Wenn monochrome Farbflächen ausgelesen werden, wiederholen sich Zeichenfolgen und lassen komplexe Metastrukturen entstehen.
WAS IST EIN CODE?

Beginnen wir mit Lacan: die Realität ist nicht das Reale! Sie ist Realität, weil sie das Reale von sich subtrahiert. Heißt das, dass das Reale die realere Realität ist? Was ist Realität? Was ist das Reale? Im Lacanschen Dispositiv ist die Realität das gedimmte Reale, das sich ihr widersetzt. Zugleich lenkt es sie wie ein Algorithmus. Früher hieß der Algorithmus Gott.
Gott nannte man – manche tun es weiterhin – das Subjekt, das den Plan hat. Ein Subjekt, das weiß. Gott ist tot,heißt – da sind nichts als Algorithmen, die keinem Metasubjekt unterstellt sind. Eine Multiplizität von Handlungsanweisungen und Handlungsoptionen, die den Intersubjektivitätsraum wie den Interobjektivitätsraum kontrollieren. Das ist die Realität, gelenkt vom Realen, das keinen Platz in ihr hat.
Wie die platonische Sonne ist das Reale unsichtbar im Raum der von ihr erzeugten Visibilität. Eine Dialektik von Sichtbarem und Unsichtbarem also: eine Gespensterdialektik von Präsenz und Absenz. Evidenz und Inevidenz.
Die Sichtbarmachung des Codes folgt dieser Dialektik. Sie beißt sich am toten Gott die Zähne aus. Der Code ist der tote Gott. Heiner Müller sagt einmal: „Die Abwesenheit Gottes ist seine Macht.“ Er beschreibt damit die Macht des Codes, der in der Unsichtbarkeit verbleibt.
Es handelt sich um eine mathematische Ontotheologie, die sich nicht mehr zwischen 1 und 0 entscheiden will. Die Macht der 0 ist die Macht des Nichts, das in Heideggers Denken mit dem Sein koinzidiert. Die ontologische Differenz besagt: Das Sein ist kein Seiendes. Es ist von der Ordnung der 0. Das Seiende ist, was ist. Es konstituiert in seiner Multiplizität den Raum der 1 = die Realität.
Der Code, der tote Gott, die Sonne, das Sein, das Nichts, das Reale markieren die selbst unmögliche Bedingung der Möglichkeit von Realität. Unter ihrem Einfluss kommt der Wirklichkeitsraum nicht zur Ruhe. Die 0 lässt die 1 erzittern. Die Differenz zwischen Realem und Realität muss in einem zweiten Denkschritt aufgehoben werden. Nachdem eine Trennlinie zwischen 0 und 1, Sein und Seiendem, Realem und Realität gezogen wurde, muss sie aufgehoben oder zumindest in ihrer Unentscheidbarkeit anerkannt werden.
Dies gilt es zu denken: Die Realität ist das Reale! Die 1 ist die 0. Das Seiende ist das Sein. Der Konsistenzraum hat seine Wahrheit in der ontologischen Inkonsistenz, die ihn kontrolliert. Realer als die Realität – das einzig Reale an ihr – ist das Nichts, das sie lenkt.

WHAT IS A CODE?

Let's start with Lacan: Reality is not real! It is reality, because it subtracts the real from itself. Does this mean that the real is the more real reality? What is reality? What's the real? In Lacan's dispositive reality is the dimmed real that resists it. At the same time, it directs like an algorithm. The algorithm used to be called God.
God was called – sometimes even still – the Subject who has the plan. A Subject that knows. God is dead, means – there are nothing but algorithms, not subject to any metasubject; a multiplicity of instructions and options for action that control the intersubjectivity space as well as the interobjectivity space. This is reality, guided by the real, which has no place in it.
Like the Platonic sun, the real is invisible in the space of visibility generated by it. A dialectic of the visible and the invisible: a ghost dialectic of presence and absence. Evidence and Inevidence.
The visualization of the code follows this dialectic. She bites her teeth out at the dead god. The code is the dead god. Heiner Müller says: "The absence of God is his power." He describes with this the power of code remaining in invisibility. It's a mathematical ontotheology no longer wanting to choose between 1 and 0. The power of 0 is the power of nothing, which in Heidegger's mind coincides with being. The ontological difference says: Being is not something that exists. It's of the order of zero. Being is what is. In its multiplicity it constitutes the space of 1 = reality.
The Code, the Dead God, the Sun, the Being, the Nothing, the Real all mark the already impossible condition of the possibility of reality. Under their influence the reality space does not come to rest. The 0 makes the 1 tremble. The difference between real and reality must be lifted into a second thought step. After a dividing line between 0 and 1, Being and being, real and reality, it must be abolished or at least recognized in its undecidability.
This is something to think about: Reality is the real! The 1 is the 0. Being is being. The consistency space has its truth in the ontological inconsistency that controls him. More real than reality - the only real thing about it - is the Nothing that directs it.
