LogReturns
LogReturns is named after a finance term “logarithmic returns.” Log returns are a way of measuring the relative percentage change in the value of an asset over a period of time. LogReturns, the artwork, is an esthetic interpretation of the calculated relative performance of the major stocks on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The resulting images look abstract, but they actually follow the principles of concrete art, directly presenting a specific subject matter.
LogReturns, doesn’t just explore the mechanisms of consumption, but presents its main driving force, the money market, which controls our very existence. While art itself, historically seen as above and beyond the functional, is being increasingly evaluated in terms of its investment performance on the art market, this artwork epitomises the money market, driving among other things, the development of the arts. While being a calculated literal take at the science of economics, LogReturns, uses the technology of algorithms instead of the human hand to turn it into a pop explosion of colour and joy, into a celebration pleasing to the eye and understandable to intuition.
The resulting vibrant image sequences are available as compact LED screen editions and fine art prints.
